Desiderius Erasmus, the Dutch humanist, was born in Rotterdam, probably on 28 October 1466. He was the illegitimate son of a physician's daughter and a man who later became a monk. He was born Gerrit Gerritszoon but later adopted the name by which he is known. He attended the school of the Brothers of the Common Life in Deventer.
